For example, restricted narration reveals information to the audience only as a specific character learns of it. It can come from many sources, including a third person (who is not a character) bringing us up-to-date, a first-person narrator commenting on the action, or, in a nonfiction film, a commentator. When referring to the more specific action of voice-narration, the narrator may be either a character in the movie (a first-person narrator) or a person who is not a character (an omniscient narrator). When spoken by a character within the movie, the commentary is first-person narration. When that commentary is not spoken by one of the characters in the movie, it is omniscient. When the word“ narration” is used to refer more narrowly to spoken narration, the reference is to commentary spoken by either an offscreen or on-screen voice. The primary source of a movie’s narration is the camera, which narrates the story by showing us the events of the narrative on-screen. PBS.org,, and some of our apps offer an option for DVS on select videos. Like closed captioning, DVS was also pioneered by PBS to ensure the widest possible audience is served. If you're not able to un-select the SAP channel, review your TV manual or contact a TV vendor who can guide you through the process. Un-selecting the SAP channel should eliminate the DVS option. The selector is usually labeled SAP, MTS, Audio 2, or Audio B on your TV panel, remote-control device, or on-screen menu. Most TVs and VCRs require you to select the SAP channel in order to receive and record DVS. Most newer-model TVs with stereophonic sound systems are able to receive a Second Audio Program (SAP) which provides enriched verbal descriptions of what is heard and seen on a TV's primary audio and video channels. You can turn this feature off and on fairly easily. You may be hearing the Descriptive Video Service (DVS) option made available to audiences who are blind or visually impaired. ![]()
